Alex Barnes is a Doctoral Student at the Oxford Department of International Development, where his research centres on business actor behaviour during the civil conflict in Antioquia and Valle del Cauca, Colombia, from 1980 to 2010. Previously, Alex worked at the Australian Department of Defence as a strategic analyst, and deployed to Afghanistan on three occasions in support of Australia’s military operations between 2011 to 2015. Alex has also worked as a Senior Analyst for IHS Markit Economics and Country Risk in London, focusing on Asia-Pacific countries. In that capacity, he has written articles for Jane’s Intelligence Review, and given several media interviews, including with TRT World and the BBC. Alex holds a BA (International Relations) from the Australian National University with First Class Honours, and an MSc in Conflict Studies with Distinction from the London School of Economics. His research interests include international development, conflict resolution, insurgency, business and politics.
